Town History

The Occaneechi Indians lived in the area in the 17th century, and participated in the fur and deerskin trade between Virginians and Piedmont Indians.  In 1676, as part of Bacon’s Rebellion, the tribe was attacked by Virginian militia. After the tribe’s departure, pioneers and settlers continued to use the strategic location along the Great Trading Path. In April 1818, the village was incorporated by the Legislature of Virginia and given the name Clarksville, in honor of Clark Royster, a planter and tavern owner who owned the land.
