In 1676, Occoneechee Island/Clarksville was the site of fighting between the colonists and Native Americans which was a part of the Francis Bacon's Rebellion.
Pioneers and settlers continued to use the Occoneechee Trading Path and in April 1818, the village was incorporated by the Legislature of Virginia and given the name of Clarksville in honor of Clark Royster, a planter and tavern owner on whose land the town was built.
